Don’t recognize game music huh?
OMG …You might be one of those persons that play a lot of games and doesn’t even know a damn thing about the music … because believe it or not, the average person doesn’t know a damn thing about video game music.
Anyway a brand new charity CD, GAME, plans to introduce this music to the masses while simultaneously donating 20% of the profits to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
It’s a 10 minute medley of Final Fantasy music, and it’s just one of 18 tracks on the GAME CD, releasing this weekend. For a mere 10 bucks you get 18 songs from games like Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World, Final Fantasy VII, plus a few anime goodies such as InuYasha. Shipping is free.
Just listen to it here:

I love game music. You know it’s good game music when you’re stuck on a level and you don’t mind the song repeating over and over.
Some game music really helps set the mood and ambiance of the game. For example, the soundtrack to Prince of Persia, The Sands of Time by Ubisoft had a really cool mixture of Arabian music and rock that took you into the Prince’s world and punctuated all the fast action. It’s a sexy soundtrack.
I’m not ashamed to say I play the CD around the house and bellydance badly.
The soundtrack to Kingdom Hearts was also a great example of quality game music.
Like the game, it had moments when it was childlike and sweet and other darker ,more sinister moments. Some of the songs are so memorable, that just hearing a certain track on the CD takes me back to a certain moment in the game. And of course, the vocal track from Kingdom Hearts “Simple and Clean” got me hooked on Japanese pop star Hikaru Utada, of whom I am a huge, drooling fan.
One talented artist ,Piano Squall tours anime and video game conventions in the US dressed as Squall from Final Fantasy and plays anime and video game theme songs on his grand piano. This is a man who treats game music as a high art form. Game music deserves that kind of respect.
Without good soundtracks, we couldn’t really become immersed in the worlds of games and we would only be getting half of an experience.
